The Board had occasion to attend the Annual Staff Breakfast sometime ago which was given in recognition of our association employees. During this time, Certificates of Appreciation were given out to acknowledge number of years of service given the association. It was remarkable to learn that some have been with us up to 14 years, and a large group 10 to 13 years, nudged by those in excess of 5 years service. Their mantra “TEAM PRIDE” stands for Teamwork, Professionalism, Respect, Integrity and Excellence, which is most evident in their job performance. This staff gathering gave us insight as to the dedication, knowledge and responsibilities as shown in all areas they represent, as they largely contribute to the success of our association.
We, as residents, truly benefit from the results of their hours spent in providing us with services . . . in our appreciation, don’t hesitate to let all our staff know they play an integral part of our daily living and enjoyment of our Sun City lifestyle. Give them a nod, a smile . . . but simply let them know!! |

We are pleased to be able to offer our employees time off during the holidays throughout the year. Many of our holidays for 2010 fall on weekend days so we observe them either the Friday before or the Monday afterwards.
Holidays mean some of the departments are closed and some have reduced hours of operation in observance of the holidays. The closed departments include Administration, Human Resources, Finance, Activities and Community Standards. The remaining departments either have limited hours or are open. These include Pro Shop, Maintenance, Fitness, Restaurant, Kitchen, Catering and Golf Course Maintenance. Signage is posted for any reduced hours or closure days.
We appreciate your support during these days of closure or reduced hours.

Spirit of Golf
Recently I came across an organization called the “Spirit of Golf” that sends me a thought of the day by email. I have found that these thoughts of the day truly embody what the game of golf is all about. Here is an excerpt from February first.
“As we become totally immersed in what we are doing right now, our preoccupation with past and future quickly fades away. Anger and frustration (past) and impatience and anxiety (future) get replaced by a different kind of calm, focused, passionate energy that is experienced in the mind/body in a very hypnotic way. We hit our golf shots from a different, deeper, more centered and powerful place inside of us, and with this inner spaciousness we begin to get a glimpse of who we really are.”
Golf is a wonderful game that can be an amazing contributor to self mastery and self awareness. As the great musician Joni Mitchell once wrote, “and still I don’t know who I am, but life is for learning.”

By Dick Geistert, Director Neighborhood Watch / Citizens Patrol
On January 28th, 2010 we installed the new “Citizen Patrol” signs on the vehicles. Many of you have stopped me in the halls and commented on how nice they look. The manual has been updated with this and many other changes. If you volunteer you must pick up a copy. If you would like to volunteer, please come in and take a copy so you can see what we do.
A resident passed along to management her gratitude to the Citizens Patrol / Neighborhood Watch. She was unloading her groceries into the basket of her scooter to bring them into the house. A gentleman in a van stopped to inquire if she needed help. He assisted her with her groceries and waited until she was safely in her home with the garage door closed. What a great place to live! Sun City Roseville has the friendliest residents. Neighbors always watch out for Neighbors.
Bicycles using the city streets must obey all the same rules as you would, if you were driving your car. This means traveling on the right side of the road, signaling when turning and stopping at all stop signs. Be sure your bike has all the safety equipment and definitely wear your helmet.

21201.5 (b) No person shall sell, or offer for sale, a new bicycle that is not equipped with a red reflector on the rear, a white or yellow reflector on each pedal visible from the front and rear of the bicycle, a white or yellow reflector on each side forward of the center of the bicycle, and a white or red reflector on each side to the rear of the center of the bicycle.
Bicycle Operated on Roadway or Highway Shoulder
21650.1 A bicycle operated on a roadway, or the shoulder of a highway, shall be operated in the same direction as vehicles are required to be driven upon the roadway.

By Terry Boren, IT Manager, Sun City Roseville
Last month I wrote about Ransomware, the malware that attempts to extort money from you if it gains access to your computer. Closely aligned with that is Scareware, which kind of extorts money from you, but is more sneaky about it.
Scareware is fake security software and tries to trick you into thinking you have a virus (actually 50 or more viruses) on you computer so that you will readily fork over cash for a program that cleans your machine. The program actually just cleans you wallet. There really isn’t a virus, just a cleverly designed couple of screens that appear to be notices from the operating system informing you of the presence of supposed viruses.
Once you know about them, they are actually fairly easy to defeat and to avoid installing them in the first place. Many people, however, will be tricked into buying a useless program which may, in fact, cause further problems.
Some of the prevalent Scareware scam programs are: Spyware Cleaner, Registry Cleaner XP, WinFixer, WinAntivirus, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, and XP Antivirus. There is also SpySheriff, which says it removes spyware but actually a piece of spyware itself known as SmitFraud. And who can forget Antivirus 2008, Antivirus 2009, and Antivirus 2010. Then there is Virus Shield 2009, Windows Security Suite, and Malware Destructor 2009.
The most common way to encounter these scam products is while surfing a website. Suddenly a window appears saying your computer is at risk, and you should “click here to scan you machine and remove these risks now,” and then supposedly, a long list of infections begin appearing on your screen and your eyes pop out. When the “scan” finishes (it is actually a static page – everyone gets the same results), there are the buttons with the fateful words, “Click here to remove infections” or “No thanks, leave my computer infected." Well, duh.
Up to this point, there is likely no infection, nothing has been downloaded, and your machine is fine if you get off the Internet and reboot your machine. However, if you DOWNLOAD the program, it then sets itself up to launch as soon as your machine restarts, making it almost unusable with constant pop-ups and warnings that you need to send $39.95 for the key to activate the virus removal product you just downloaded and installed.
The key takeaway is to never, never, never ever click on anything that looks like security software on a web page that pops up. Do not even click on the ‘X’ in the top corner to close the window. Doing anything to indicate you have seen the window will likely start the download install process, and you have just initiated an expensive process to remove it. (Of course, nothing could install itself because you are not logged on to your computer with administrative privileges, right?) Yea, right…..
Instead, press the ‘Alt’ and ‘F4’ keys at the same time to instantly close the current web browser window. Actually, Alt-F4 closes whatever the active window or program is currently open.
ScareWare will make itself as difficult as possible to remove, including turning off your real antivirus, blocking it from updating, and keeping you from launching any utilities that might help remove it. Click here to see a sample screen shot:

Don’t be fooled. Try the Alt-F4 key combination to see how it shuts down a program.

You wouldn’t download an unlisted antivirus program, would you?

Reminder
The Memories R' Us Workshop shows how to use photo memory books, build family roots, increase family communications, pass on experience and values or just re-enjoy your good old days. You will also be able to use these techniques for reunions, anniversaries and gift ideas.
The free introductory workshop on February 25th is in the Aspen Room from 9 to 11. This workshop covers how to choose and organize those many memories and photos, how to write about them so folks will read them, and an overview on how to share and publish them easily and inexpensively. Go to the SCR resident website, click on Golden Years, and then click on Share Your Memories for more information. A follow up "hands on" class will be scheduled if there is sufficient interest.
Make a reservation by calling activities at 774-3888. Seating is limited.
