First and foremost I want to wish you and your family a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.  During the holidays Sun City Roseville was bathed in beautiful lights, the lodge was all decorated and aglow as were many homes. The Needle Arts Club held its annual home show and luncheon and the various clubs and groups held their seasonal celebrations. We have developed quite a holiday tradition.

By Cora Rose, Treasurer, Sun City Roseville Board of Directors

The Needle Arts Club held its annual home show and luncheon and the various clubs and groups held their seasonal celebrations. We have developed quite a holiday tradition.

Now all the hubbub of the holiday season is behind us and we are looking forward to 2012. Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? Some of us determine we want to go back to exercising, learn more about what we can do with our computer, learn how to play bridge, join a singing group or volunteer on a Sun City Roseville committee.

We are fortunate to have the opportunity to do any of these or other activities right here in our community. Come on out and take advantage of all that Sun City Roseville has to offer!

ACTIVITIES

See What's Coming Up
Sharon Mowry, Sun City Roseville Activities Director

The Activities Department has been busy as we plan for 2012 and the months ahead.
Throughout the year we have trips planned to Red Hawk every other month, Feather Falls at the beginning of February, trips to Reno at the Silver Legacy and the El Dorado Hotel & Casino, and I’m working on a trip to South Lake Tahoe in August.

We’ve also got tickets to Broadway Shows – West Side Story, Wicked, Mama Mia and the Million Dollar Quartet.

We’ve got trips to Golden Gate Fields in February, April and June.  We’ve got tickets to the River Cats games for April, May, and July.

June 27, we’re going to AT&T Park in San Francisco to see the S.F. Giants vs. the L.A. Dodgers. Makes me think of a good ol’ hotdog and peanuts at the ballpark!

We’ve got a Mystery Trip planned for May – can’t tell you where but Trudi has pulled out all the stops!

In September, we’re going to see the Great Balloon Race in Reno.

And there’s more.  This week we have a full bus heading to Palm Springs, and another full bus headed to Reno and the Snow Train next month.

I haven’t covered everything, but I would invite you to look at the Courier, and also check in at the Monitors Desk and view the “Mark Your Calendar” that gets updated monthly.

Lastly, remember...the Activities are for you.  My goal is to arrange trips that you find fun, and affordable.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH & CITIZENS PATROL

Alarm Systems in Roseville
By Dick Geistert, Director Neighborhood Watch / Citizens Patrol

Many Sun City residents have alarms for their homes.  Our Neighborhood Watch database shows that there are 418 homes with alarms.  City of Roseville has made some changes.

The City of Roseville's burglary and robbery alarm program is managed by CryWolf, a third-party alarm administrator.  CryWolf issues the City's burglary and robbery alarm permits and annual renewals, and manages our false alarm reduction program.  To get or renew alarm permit, pay a false alarm fine, or get information about the City's requirements for alarm systems and how to prevent false alarms, go to CryWolf’s Web site

Law Enforcement personnel respond to thousands of false alarm calls yearly. These unnecessary responses result in an enormous burden in manpower and expense; which in turn reduces the time available to respond to real emergencies.  Following is “in part” the municipal code involving alarm systems.

10.64.050 Audible alarm requirements.
A. Sirens Prohibited. It is unlawful to use, maintain, or install an alarm system that emits the sound of a siren.  This section shall not be construed to prohibit the use of certain electronic horns or howlers that may be approved by the Police Chief, provided that they do not emit a sound similar to a siren.

B. Automatic Shutoff Required. Every audible alarm system shall have an automatic shutoff device that shall be adjusted so that an external audible alarm signal will sound for no longer than 15 minutes after being activated.

10.64.060 Alarm system permit required.
A. Individual Users. It is unlawful to activate, operate or maintain an alarm system upon any alarm site within the city without possessing a current alarm system permit.

10.64.100 Transfer of permit prohibited.
Alarm permits may not be transferred to another person or alarm site. Permits are valid only for the permittee and address listed on the permit.

10.64.140 Applications—Forms.
A. Applications for all permits required by this chapter shall be filed with the Roseville Police Department and shall be accompanied by a fee of $35.00. Annual renewal permit applications are required and shall be accompanied by a fee of $5.00. These fees are established to cover part of the cost of investigating and processing the applications and permits and are not refundable.

10.64.160 Excessive false alarm—Reimbursement.
A. Whenever the Police Department responds to a false alarm, the permittee shall reimburse the city in accordance with the following schedule:

Residences/Businesses Burglary Duress/Robbery
1. First False Alarm - No Charge
2. Second False Alarm - $60.00
3. Third False Alarm - $85.00
4. Fourth False Alarm - $100.00
5. Fifth and Subsequent False Alarms - $150.00

B. Fines are determined by the combined number of both burglary and duress/robbery false alarms.

C. Failure to promptly reimburse the city shall be deemed a breach of contract and a civil debt owed to the city.

D. Reimbursement may be waived by the Police Chief or designee where uncommon circumstances not considered an emergency resulted in a false alarm and where the permittee has undertaken to correct alarm system deficiencies.

WEB & COMPUTER TIPS

Hi, I’m From Microsoft and I’m Here to Help

By Terry Boren, Sun City Roseville IT / Website Manager

Have you ever received a call from Microsoft, Dell, etc., telling you your computer is infected?  They may hedge and use the term “may be infected”, but still, someone from a big company is calling you about your computer.  They guy on the other end of the line may even sound more believable because he sounds like he is calling from India and everyone knows all computer support has been outsourced to India.

The very first thing you want to know, is that Microsoft or Dell or any other company will NEVER call you about your computer.  Think about it – you can barely get them to accept your call when you have a problem, why would they be calling you when you don’t even know you have a problem?

It is part of a scam that has been hitting people here in Sun City.  Just last week Bill Martin, who repairs computers, told me six of his customers had received so-called support calls from big name companies telling them their computers were infected.

Sometimes they email you instead of calling, saying your computer is (may be) infected and that you should click a link, go to a website, and download a program or grant access to your computer.  Don’t.  The only exception is if it is in response to a call you  originally initiated.

I’ve written before about scareware, ransomware, and malware masquerading as free antivirus software, that users are tricked into installing on their machines, which amazingly finds about a hundred “viruses”.  Of course, if you want to actually remove the “infections”, you will have to pony-up $59.95 on your Visa card.  That would be a really bad idea because not only have you wasted $59.95, the scammers now have your name and credit card details.

You don’t have to be paranoid – you just have to think before you respond.  Would that company really email me or call me about my computer?  Really?
