Writing Your Personal History
February, 2007

Leber Family, York PA

No matter how “ordinary” you think your life has been, your children, grandchildren and other family members can find it fascinating. Whether you want them to know now or after you are gone, it is important to start now.  But, you ask, what do they want to know? The answer is anything you want to tell them. You do not have to start from the beginning, your birth, you can start anywhere in your life.  Once you start writing, other memories will return. If you don’t like to write, buy a tape recorder, and talk into it then have someone write or type it for you.

How to Get Started:

  • Buy a notebook or diary and jot down memories and experiences as they come to you. They do not have to be in chronological order. When you’ve got several memories from a similar period of time (say your childhood), you can start to put them together in a logical format, say on your computer.
  • Get a book on how to write your life’s history for ideas. One of the better books is Legacy, A Step-by-Step guide to Writing Personal History, by Linda Spence. The author provides ideas and questions to help stimulate your thoughts.
  • Get your birth family involved – talk to parents, siblings, cousins, close family friends and share memories. They may provide information about your life that you had forgotten.
  • Enjoy the process.

Do you have a Roseville Library card?  If so, you can access a very powerful genealogy program called Heritage Quest, from the comfort of your own home.  To access the program:

  • Log onto the library website:  www.roseville.ca.us/library
  • Look down the left side and click "online databases.”
  • Go to Heritage Quest.
  • You will need to enter the barcode on your library card. You may be asked for a password that you can set up with the library.
  • Some of the information you can access are the US censuses from 1790, books from all over the country with information about people. (One could be your relative.)

The SCR Genealogy Group meets Wednesday February 7, at 1:00pm in the Computer Room. Bring your questions about census information to this workshop. Information on genealogy meetings is located in the Sun Senior News and Courier, under the Computer Club.
