Ancestry.com
Ancestry.com is Almost Here!

July, 2007

The Computer Club has purchased a one-year subscription to Ancestry.com that can be accessed from any computer in the computer room. As of August 1, it will be available for use by anyone living in Sun City Roseville (see below for availability).

Ancestry.com is the best known and largest subscription genealogy website in the world. With new records being added every week it is important to check it on a regular basis for your long lost ancestors. Their most recent endeavor has been to add information on servicemen/women dating back to the American Revolution.

Some of the more popular and useful records are:

  • US censuses dating back from 1790 (except 1890 which burned in a fire many years ago)
  • The Social Security Death Index (SSDI) dating back to the 1930’s
  • Military and veterans records
  • Passenger lists (people immigrating to the US)
  • British census records
  • Records from other countries
  • US state records
  • City Directories and phone books
  • Biographies and Histories
  • Family trees – information submitted by subscribers

All information on Ancestry.com can be printed out so there is no need to hand copy. Printers are available in the Computer Room for a nominal cost for copies.

Ancestry.com can be used by computer club members starting August 1, during regular computer room hours.  Non members can use it Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. Two members of the Genealogy group are available on a regular basis during regular computer room hours if you need help:

Marilyn Larson – the first Friday of each month
Phyllis Searle – the second Thursday of each month

Workshops will be held as needed.

Genealogy Group Meeting

The Wednesday, August 1 meeting will be held in the Cedar Room at 1 pm (there is no meeting in July). Jim Faulkenbury will speak on “US Naturalization Records,” their value and where to locate them. Jim is a Professional Genealogist and a member of several Societies: NGS, CGS, Continental European Family History Assoc, and the Sacramento German Society. He is a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and of the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America. His published works include "The Foreign-Born Voter's of California in 1872," as well as contributions to genealogical books and journals.

More information on Ancestry will also be provided.
