Military Records
January 2008

This month's article is on Military records websites. Hope it is helpful!

The next Genealogy meeting will be held Wednesday March 5 at 1 pm in the Cedar Room. Our guest speaker will be Barbara Leak, well known genealogy speaker and president of the Genealogical and Historical Council of Sacramento Valley. Her topic will be "Getting Organized." We all have papers, photos, documents, and other ephemera that we use for our genealogy research. She will give us ideas on how to organize it so we can find it when we need it.

In doing research for this article I found numerous websites dealing with military records. Some of the websites were no longer active so I left them off the list. Below is but a sampling of places to look for military records. If you are fortunate to have had an ancestor in a major war, you are likely to find an abundance of information on him/her.

Multiple Wars Records Websites:

http://www.ancestry.com/  since Ancestry is available to all residents of the community in the Computer Room, this is the place to start. They are acquiring more and more records on military people for all wars.

http://www.cyndislist.com There are thousands of sites on this website for every imaginable situation you might want to look up. Included in this are military websites. On the home page scroll down to the “m’s” for military.

www.archives.gov/research/ - The National Archives has a vast amount of resources and records. Most require ordering copies from them or going to a National Archives in the geographic area you are searching. It’s worth looking at

home.att.net/~wee-monster/military.html - Online Searchable Military Records and Databases. You will find military records specific information on this site. Some of them you will have seen on other websites, but there will be some new ones for you as well.

http://military.hist.unt.edu/resources.htm - This site is hosted by the University of North Texas. It, too, has a number of resources.

www.militaryindexes.com - Online Military Indexes and Records

War Specific Websites:

American Revolution
www.dar.org - Daughters of the American Revolution. This is the place to start to find your patriot. Go to patriot look up – you will need to fill out some information about yourself and your ancestor.

http://www.sar.org/ - Sons of the American Revolution. Usually, the information on your ancestor will be located on the DAR site so check there first.

www.multied.com/revolt/ - History of the American Revolution. This website provides the historical facts of the revolution.

www.royalprovincial.com - British Loyalists in the Revolution. For those of you whose ancestors stayed with the British and fought the “rebels,” here is the site for you.

Civil War

www.cwc.lsu.edu/- The US Civil War Center

www.civilwar.nps.gov - Civil War Soldier & Sailors system/National Park Service
